He’s small, but Jack may be his family’s only hope… Eight-year-old Jack is heartbroken when his father doesn’t return from fighting against the Viking invaders, and he feels even worse when he must leave his home and move to a new village. When he gets there, Jack becomes friends with the confident Ashling but also encounters Padraig, a threatening bully who’s the son of the village’s richest man. Jack soon begins to suspect that humans aren’t the only inhabitants of the new village; the signs of the wee folk are unmistakable. But when an unseen menace threatens what’s left of his family, Jack has to use all his wits and courage to unravel the secret of the Hollow Hill. “At first, nothing happened, but then Jack heard a voice to his side. He whirled around and saw a pair of glowing eyes looking at him from within one of the fallen stones. He quickly realized, though, that the eyes weren’t in the stone but that a small, man-like creature that looked like a stone was sitting on a rock and watching him. Its clothes were the speckled brown and green of soil and grass. It wore a cap the dark gray color of flint over hair that was the scraggly thin yellow of dried moss. Its skin was the pale gray of limestone, and its mouth was a line of sharp tan pebbles. But what Jack noticed most was its large eyes glowing yellow like gold in a furnace. It looked at Jack and growled, Who is this, who disturbs my hill? Answer this, or suffer it will!
